Part 4: Sermon on the Mount Series: How hungry are you?

Jesus calls us to recognize the importance of having spiritual passion and appetite. Matthew 5:6 (NIV) states, “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.” After a hard day of work, we can get really hungry or thirsty because we feel physically depleted. Jesus speaks here of a different type of hunger and thirst. Jesus is speaking of a craving for spiritual things-righteousness. God promises to supply us with spiritual nourishment if we desire it.

This same principle of being filled can also be seen in our marriages. One of the first questions we ask a couple when we begin coaching them is, “On a scale of 0-10, with ten being the most, how motivated are you in working on your marriage?”  We ask this question to gauge their hunger and desire to see change in their relationship. This desire to see change dramatically impacts the couples' results. We believe the most important principle in a relationship is a commitment to work on the relationship. We say, “It will work if you work it.” If a couple is not motivated to work on the relationship, they will most likely not get healthy results.

What can you do if your spiritual and relational hunger is low? First, confess and believe. Acknowledge to God that you lack the passion you need, and believe him for a fresh supply of his Spirit to invigorate you. Second, take time to invest in your relationship. Be intentional about setting aside time to work on your relationship. Thirdly, show appreciation for your spouse. Let your spouse know verbally that you value them.

Where do you rate your spiritual and relational hunger, 0-10 (10=highest)? What is one thing you can do this week to allow God to work in your life and stir up your passion?

“For they will be filled.”
