Marriage Mission Statement: Part 2: Putting God First

We use the acronym GUIDE to help us formulate a mission statement for our marriages. The mission statement is more than a statement of where you are; it is a statement of where you want to get to or be. It is written rocket fuel to propel your relationship in new directions.

The acronym GUIDE stands for G-God, U-Us/Teamwork, I-Intimacy, D-Dreams, and E-Empathy/Encouragement. We will explore these more in-depth over the next few weeks.

Proverbs 1:7 (NASB) says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge.” We believe that when God is placed in his proper position in our marriage, then he will be able to work in our lives freely. When we don’t elevate God in our lives, we are essentially shutting him out. It is like we are slamming the door in his face.

Ask yourself the following questions to help design the G section of your marriage mission statement.

How do you elevate God in your life and marriage? How do you give him public praise for what he is doing in your lives?

How do you see God working with you to fulfill his purpose as a married couple?

What has he uniquely challenged/gifted you to do?

Where do you feel God's pull? What is he speaking into your spirit?

What area of spiritual gifting or growth is God calling you to?

What scripture do you feel defines who God is to your marriage?

God wants to use your marriage uniquely to lift him up and bring glory to his name. Take time to think about how you can do this better as a couple or where you envision God leading you.

This is an example:

Romans 1:17: “The just shall live by faith.” We walk by faith. Like Abraham and Sarah, we trust God and will still hold to his promises even when we don't see the end in sight and even when things take longer than we expected. We believe big. We use our words to encourage others to have faith and to trust God's word. As much as we can, we will seek to give God the worship due to him. We will use our unique gifts of planning and organizing to help others and the local church body reach its full potential.

This is only an example. You can see the different concepts from some of the questions that were added to the statement. You don't have to use every answer to the questions. Think about what is really important to you to have in your statement.

Next week, we will explore the letter U in the acronym GUIDE.

If you have found this helpful, please share it with others.
