Over the next several weeks, we will help you work with your spouse to craft a Marriage Mission Statement (MMS) that will help clarify your marriage goals and vision.
What is a marriage mission statement?
It is a vision of what you want your marriage to be and what core values and beliefs are a part of it. It is reflective of your priorities and what you are passionate about.
How to begin
Set some time to talk about it. Individually, come up with about six traits or descriptions of what you want your marriage to be. Brainstorm. Dream Big. It is not a collection of everything that is important but the most important.
Helpful ideas to think about:
1. What do you like about your marriage?
2. What don’t you like about your marriage?
3. Why do you like being part of your marriage?
4. What is different about your marriage?
5. What other marriage do you really respect? Why?
6. What is important to your marriage?
7. What kind of marriage do you want to have?
8. What scripture do you want your marriage to reflect?
9. What kind of spouse do you want to be? How do you want to resolve conflict? How do you want to make each other feel?
10. What would you want to be said about your marriage at your funeral?
The above are initial questions to help you formulate your final statement. Please write your thoughts down. We use an acronym called GUIDE to help you create your MMS. We will explain more about GUIDE in the next post and also begin with the letter G.
