Love Never Fails: What has your attention?

Have you ever found yourself distracted? Have you ever lost interest in your spouse? Have you ever failed to prioritize your relationship? 1 Corinthians 13:13 (NASB) states, “But now faith, hope, love, abide these three; but the greatest of these is love.” The writer, Paul, calls our attention to the idea that faith, hope, and love are crucial, but the more significant concern is love. What is the bigger concern in your marriage?

It is easy for us to get sidetracked, especially in our marriage. We become familiar with each other. We begin to take each other for granted. We lose the sense of awe and wonder we had when we first started dating. We become focused on the daily grind, the bills, the house, the car, the (fill in the blank). Before we know it, we feel disconnected from each other. We may sit across each other and wonder, “Do I even know who you are?”

How do we get back on track? Have you ever heard the expression, “Trace your steps backward?” Tracing our steps backward is what can help here. We need to start doing the things we stopped that were helpful to our relationship. We also need to remove the things that are stumbling blocks in our relationship. Make a course correction by intentionally taking time together, laughing together, playing together, doing work or tasks together, showing genuine appreciation for each other, and, as believers, praying with each other. Making a conscious effort to identify “Joy stealers” and “intimacy stealers” is the starting point to reviving your relationship.

The greatest of these is love.

Life application:

  1. What must you do to “trace your steps backward” in your relationship? You and your spouse can list what you believe are “Joy and intimacy stealers.”

  2. What new thing could you and your spouse do that would help you reconnect? What kind of fun activities did you do when you dated?

  3. Commit to doing at least one thing this week that will help bring you closer again.
