Has your spouse ever said something really nice about you, and you just seemed to smile inside and think, “That felt good?” When you received that positive comment, you felt more attracted and connected to them. 1 Corinthians 13:6 (NIV) says, “Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.” Love is attracted to and supports truth. Expressing compliments is speaking truth to your spouse and hence increasing feelings of attraction.

Some of the top reasons women have affairs are low self-esteem and feeling emotionally starved. Your wife wants to feel valued in your eyes, and most likely, complimenting them twice a year is not enough. Complimenting your spouse brings instant goodwill and validates them. If you feel distant from your spouse, increase how much you validate them.

Celeste and I (Kelvin) call complimenting the “Tool of the Compliment.” Like other tools used to accomplish something, so is complimenting. Be intentional about your compliments. Compliment your spouse in front of others. If you want to continue encouraging good actions, compliment your spouse even when they seem to come up short; compliment them for trying.

How much more pleasant would it be when the first words you say to each other daily are compliments instead of words of negativity? If remembering to compliment is difficult for you, put a reminder on your calendar app. Build your marriage with your words and actions.

Life Application:

How will you increase the number of compliments you give your spouse this week? In what way will you be intentional about giving your spouse compliments? Do you know what your spouse enjoys most to be complimented about, and how will you use that to build genuine goodwill toward them?

Compliments are indeed powerful.
