Men, Don’t Miss This!

Have you ever had those conversations with your wife and asked yourself, “What did I say? What was that all about?” Sometimes, we don't understand our wife's language and feel we need an interpreter to help us get through to them. Join us as we continue our journey exploring 1 Corinthians 13 verse 1, “If I speak with the tongues of men and of angels but do not have love, I have become a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal (NASB).” Wow! That sounds pretty disappointing.

Can you identify with a time in your marriage when you felt you made the most outstanding oral defense of why or why not you should do something, and it appeared to fall on deaf ears? I (Kelvin) used to do this frequently in our marriage. So what is the problem, and how do we fix it? How do we keep from being a “noisy gong?”

As men, we sometimes tend to address the logic of a situation and what needs to be done about something; what we miss is addressing the emotions underlying the situation (women can do this also). Don’t miss this! If you start paying attention to the underlying emotions about an issue, you will significantly improve your marriage.

You can do this by learning to ask your wife more than about WHAT happened but how she FEELS about what happened. Listen, listen, and listen some more; sometimes, we don't need to fix everything. Listening to her emotions is a love component that we want to add to our discussions. When I (Kelvin) started doing this, my conversation with my wife changed drastically. It helps her to feel safe and understood. When you start listening to the emotional component of her words, you will have more productive conversations. Talk with your wife and share how you want to improve.

Men, don’t miss this!
