Do you know how to love your spouse well? I Corinthians 13:2 (TNT) says, “If I understand God’s hidden secrets, possess unending supernatural knowledge, and have the most profound faith but have never learned how to love, then I am nothing.”

God calls us to love our spouses well. Understanding our spouses (knowing) helps us to love them better. It takes lots of communication and time to understand each other. Ask yourself, what is really behind what my spouse is saying? When we learn to listen to our spouse's words and their emotions, we gain an understanding of their thoughts and feelings. This is how to love your spouse well.

I (Celeste) did not understand that my husband had feelings. He acted tough. He never cried; unlike myself, I was very emotional. I didn’t think the unkind and hurtful words I said to him hurt him, but one day, I discovered that my actions and words hurt him deeply. I repented to God and my husband for these behaviors.

God gives us spiritual gifts and talents. You can articulate well; you may even teach lessons or preach sermons. You could predict future events. Prophecy is a gift from God, but PROPHECY is not love.

There are many things you may know about, but KNOWLEDGE is not love. However, knowing your mate deepens your love for them.

Do you believe you are a person of great faith? Faith without love is nothing.

I Corinthians 13:2 says, If I have spiritual gifts but don’t have love, I am NOTHING.

Life application: Set a time of 20-30 min. each day to talk to your spouse about needs in your marriage. Listen to each other and avoid interrupting each other. This is the tool of the meeting. After 3-5 sentences, the listener should summarize the speaker's words. This takes time, so don’t get frustrated. This is the tool of repeating back. This new communication pattern will allow each person to share their thoughts and feelings freely. These tools help the couple to communicate clearly and know each other. Pray for each other’s needs. This is love!
